Solitary waves in discrete media with anomalous compressibility and similar to ''sonic vacuum''
Propagation of deformation pulses in significantly nonlinear media with inner structure where there is no 1inea.r part in interaction force between neighboring structure elements is considered. This makes impossible the application of traditional wave equation or developed earlier approaches wherein nonlinearity serves as a small correction and requires the development of a qualitatively new no...
متن کاملIon Sound Solitary Waves with Density Depressions
We show that a non-thermal electron distribution may change the nature of ion acoustic solitons. If the ions are assumed to respond as a fluid to perturbations in the potential, with no significant trapping in a potential well, then a thermal plasma only supports a solitary waves with a density peak. However, with a suitable distribution of non-thermal particles, solitary waves with both densit...
متن کاملShoaling internal solitary waves
[1] The evolution and breaking of internal solitary waves in a shallow upper layer as they approach a constant bottom slope is examined through laboratory experiments. The waves are launched in a two-layer fluid through the standard lock-release method. In most experiments, the wave amplitude is significantly larger than the depth of the shallow upper layer so that they are not well described b...
متن کاملExact Solitary Water Waves with Vorticity
The solitary water wave problem is to find steady free surface waves which approach a constant level of depth in the far field. The main result is the existence of a family of exact solitarywaves of small amplitude for an arbitrary vorticity. Each solution has a supercritical parameter value and decays exponentially at infinity. The proof is based on a generalized implicit function theorem of t...
متن کاملSolitary Waves of Depression
It is shown that the regularized long-wave equation admits a family of solitary waves of depression. Some of these solitary waves are stable while others are unstable. The proof of stability and instability is based on the general theory of Grillakis, Shatah and Strauss. The results are illustrated by numerical simulation using a spectral discretization.
